The trimaran Groupama 3 is directly derived from the Orma class, with the usage of foils and other typical solutions. It was also necessary to take into account the `Southern ocean' parameter: the foils are far forward so that the boat is nose up, the freeboard is high to prevent the bow from burying, the height of the mast limits the trim changes . The balance when sailing is considerably safer than on a 60 foot Orma.
Designed by Vincent Lauriot-Prevost from the architectural firm VPLP, and built by Multiplast boatyard, it was baptized in June 2006, after 126,000 hours of work.
She is the largest sailing boat in the world, and she has already beaten a great number of records, including the prestigious North Atlantic crossing, and the greatest distance in 24 hours: 794 miles (average 33 knots).
Similarly, modeling Groupama 3 in Virtual-Skipper was also eased by the experience gained with Orma, and also thanks to Groupama Engineering Office, who provided a lot of informations and support.
