Orange Around the World Challenge

Orange II is the fastest sailing ship around the world. The first sailing ship to top 700 miles in 24 hours, her record of 766 miles over 24 hours has just been broken by the new generation trimaran Groupama3 skipped by Franck Cammas (795 miles in 24 hours on July 21, 2007).

But Orange II still holds since 2005 the absolute record around the world, established on the Jules-Verne Trophy, with 50 days, 16 hours, 20 minutes and 4 seconds.

At Orange's helm, Virtual-Winds is inviting you to relive this fantastic achievement by taking part in the Orange Around the World Challenge on VirtualSkipper5.

Orange II in the Vsk5 Around the World Challenge.

The Orange Around the World Challenge is played in solo mode on a worldwide map, especially designed by Omr (Blue Beach Team).

With the boat handled well, and the course well understood, good players will be able to complete the challenge in 80 minutes. Will you be able to achieve 50 minutes ?

NB : The map is freely adapted from the Mercator's projection, also known as Gauss or UTM (Universal Transversal Mercator) projection.

You will have to avoid the Doldrums, to negotiate the Roaring Forties and the Screaming Fifties, and then climb up your way back up in the Atlantic, closed hauled.

Lighthouses indicate the position of the Doldrums, and traffic boats give an indication of the wind: the bigger they are the more wind there is, and they are anchored facing the wind's direction. The waves' size is also an good indication.

Winds and currents are adapted from the dominating ones affecting the planet in July.

How to participate ?

The Orange Around The World Challenge is opened as of August, 5th, 2007.

You must download and install the Orange II for Vsk5 pack, which includes the map.

You have to record your attempt in Vsk5 and send the replay to :

defi-orange(at)virtual-winds(dot)com

Performances will be validated after analysis of the replay
and results will be published starting August, 5th, 2007 at
La Taverne where a dedicated forum has been opened.
